‘Kia tika a muri, ka ora a mua’ – if the right support is given from the back, then the work of those at the front will be successful. Health and disability support providers that are owned and governed by Māori (Māori providers) are a distinctive feature of the New Zealand health sector. With their emphasis on whānau ora and developing health services that work for Māori, Māori providers play an integral part in providing whānau with the opportunities they need to take control over their own health and wellbeing. Ka tika ka ora represents the first time the Ministry of Health (the Ministry) and District Health Boards (DHBs) have developed an overview of their activities to support Māori providers. Ka tika ka ora is about more than just Ministry and DHB contracts with individual providers; it is about ensuring Māori providers have the support they need to be effective, high performing organisations.
