District Health Board (DHB) elections!

Nominations open July 23 and close at noon on 20 August

Every three years the seats around the big tables at New Zealand’s 20 DHBs are up for grabs – with elections to decide who will end up on the new boards.

Elections are now underway – so now’s the time to decide whether you, or someone you know, may be right for those positions. A prior knowledge of the health system can be an advantage, but it isn’t essential!

Voting which is by postal ballot, starts on 17 September, and closes at noon on 9 October. Contact your local DHB for details (ask for the “Secretary to the Board”).

Visit this web page to put your name forward for one of the appointed roles on DHB boards

This is your chance to participate, and make sure that the voices of your whānau, hapu and iwi are heard!

A further report that explores CCID and trends from 1989 to 2008 will be released in June 2010 and made available on the Ministry of Health website.

Improving health literacy

Health literacy is the ability to understand basic health messages. These short documentaries were produced as part of an increasing focus in the health sector on health literacy. The report
Kōrero Mārama – Health Literacy and Māori, describes the health literacy skills of Māori compared to non-Māori.

Part of the Ministry’s work programme to improve health literacy for Māori involves finding new ways to communicate health information effectively. Health TV delivers key health messages to Māori whānau through a medium that is relevant, informative, and easy to understand.

These two short documentaries are screening across the Health TV network in the waiting rooms of 77 health centres (General Practices) around New Zealand. For more information on Health TV, visit www.htv.co.nz.
