The following are two maps based on 2001 Census data: the first showing the number of Māori living in each DHB in 2001, and the second showing the proportion of each DHBs population that is Māori in 2001.

Text description: This map of New Zealand portrays the number of Māori based on the 2001 Census, living within each of the 21 District Health Board areas. The highest number of Māori are in the Northland, Counties Manukau, Waikato and Bay of Plenty DHB areas (39703-64290). They are followed by Waitemata, Lakes and Hawkes Bay DHB areas (28735-39702). Next are MidCentral, Capital and Coast, Hutt Valley and Canterbury DHB areas (19375-28734) followed by Tairawhiti, Taranaki, Whanganui and Southland DHB areas (9880-19374). The DHB areas with the lowest number of Māori are Wairarapa, Nelson Marlborough, West Coast, South Canterbury and Otago (2532-9879).

Text description: This map of New Zealand portrays the population proportion of Māori based on the 2001 Census, living within each of the 21 District Health Board areas. The DHB areas with the highest proportion of Māori are Northland, Bay of Plenty, Lakes and Tairawhiti (24%-44%) followed by Counties Manakau, Waikato, Whanganui and Hawkes Bay (16%-23%). Next are Taranaki, MidCentral, Wairarapa and Hutt Valley (11%-15%) followed by Auckland, Capital and Coast, West Coast and Southland (9%-10%). The DHB areas with the lowest proportion of Māori are Nelson Marlborough, Canterbury, South Canterbury and Otago (5%-8%).
