DHB participation analysis

Below is a description of the DHBs with: the most candidates participating in a science subject in 2007; the highest participation rates in 2007; the largest increases in numbers participating in a science subject between 2004 and 2007; and the largest increases in participation rates between 2004 and 2007.

Year 11 Māori Candidates Participation (7734 Nationally)

In 2007, the three DHBs with the highest numbers of Year 11 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Waikato DHB, 954 candidates
  • Counties Manukau DHB, 680 candidates
  • Northland DHB, 635 candidates.

In 2007, the three DHBs with the highest percentage of Year 11 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Otago DHB, 85.4% - (176 of 206 candidates)
  • Southland DHB, 84.7% - (177 of 209 candidates)
  • Hutt DHB, 82.2% - (287 of 349 candidates).

Between 2004 and 2007, the three DHBs with the highest increases in the number of Year 11 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Counties Manukau DHB, 211 candidates - (469 to 680 candidates)
  • Northland DHB, 167 candidates - (468 to 635 candidates)
  • Waikato DHB, 165 candidates - (789 to 954 candidates).

Between 2004 and 2007, the three DHBs with the highest percentage increases in the number of Year 11 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • West Coast DHB, 128.0% - (25 to 57 candidates)
  • South Canterbury DHB, 45.2% - (31 to 45 candidates)
  • Counties Manukau, 45.0% - (469 to 680 candidates).

Year 12 Māori Candidates Participation (2480 Nationally)

In 2007, the three DHBs with the highest numbers of Year 12 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Waikato DHB, 312 candidates
  • Counties Manukau DHB, 212 candidates
  • Bay of Plenty DHB, 212 candidates.

In 2007, the three DHBs with the highest percentage of Year 12 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • West Coast DHB, 46.5% - (20 of 43 candidates)
  • Southland, 41.8% - (74 of 177 candidates)
  • Otago DHB, 39.8% - (64 of 161 candidates).

Between 2004 and 2007, the three DHBs with the highest increases in the number of Year 12 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Counties Manukau DHB, 89 candidates - (123 to 212 candidates)
  • Bay of Plenty DHB, 64 candidates - (148 to 212 candidates)
  • Waikato DHB, 60 candidates - (252 to 312 candidates).

Between 2004 and 2007, the three DHBs with the highest percentage increases in the number of Year 12 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • West Coast DHB, 150.0% - (8 to 20 candidates)
  • Wairarapa DHB, 115.4% - (13 to 28 candidates)
  • Hutt DHB, 100.0% - (50 to 100 candidates).

Year 13 Māori Candidates Participation (1008 Nationally)

In 2007, the three DHBs with the highest numbers of Year 13 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Waikato DHB, 126 candidates
  • Northland DHB, 96 candidates
  • Waitemata DHB, 81 candidates.

In 2007, the three DHBs with the highest percentage of Year 13 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • West Coast DHB, 38.9% - (7 of 18 candidates)
  • Otago DHB, 33.0% - (30 of 91 candidates)
  • Nelson Marlborough DHB, 32.3% - (31 of 96 candidates).

Between 2004 and 2007, the three DHBs with the highest increases in the number of Year 13 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Northland DHB, 36 candidates - (60 to 96 candidates)
  • Waikato DHB, 34 candidates - (92 to 126 candidates)
  • Waitemata, 30 candidates - (51 to 81 candidates).

Between 2004 and 2007, the three DHBs with the highest percentage increases in the number of Year 13 Māori candidates participating in a science subject were:
  • Wairarapa DHB, 100.0% - (5 to 10 candidates)
  • Tairawhiti DHB, 90.5% - (21 to 40 candidates)
  • Nelson Marlborough, 72.2% (18 to 31 candidates).
