Participation analysis: All science subjects, Year 11 to 13 candidates

Year 11 Candidates

In 2007, there were 11,186 Year 11 Māori candidates studying within the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Of these, 7734 participated in a science subject, an increase of 1784 candidates from 2004 (table 1).

Between 2004 and 2007, the participation rate of Year 11 Māori candidates in a science subject increased by 2.8% to 69.1%. During this time, the non-Māori rate remained higher at around 85%.

Year 12 Candidates

In 2007, there were 7705 Year 12 Māori candidates studying within the NQF. Of these, 2480 participated in a science subject, an increase of 609 candidates from 2004 (table 2).

Between 2004 and 2007, there was little change in the participation rates of Year 12 Māori and non-Māori candidates in a science subject. The Year 12 Māori participation rate remained around 32% and the non-Māori rate remained around 53%.

Year 13 Candidates

In 2007, there were 4478 Year 13 Māori candidates studying within the NQF. Of these, 1008 participated in a science subject, an increase of 181 candidates from 2004 (table 3).

Between 2004 and 2007, the participation rate of Year 13 Māori candidates in a science subject decreased by 2.1% to 22.5%, while the non-Māori rate decreased by 6.8% to 41%. This means that the gap between Year 13 Māori and non-Māori candidates’ participation rates reduced from 23.2% in 2004 to 18.5% in 2007.
