Overall, the research provides an in-depth discusssion of:
  1. The barriers to the recruitment and retention of Māori in the Health Workforce
  2. The factors that facilitate the recruitment and retention of Māori in the Health workforce
  3. A Māori Health and Disability Workforce Development Pathway
  4. Determinants of Māori Health and Disability Workforce Development
  5. National initiatives and support mechanisms to retain and recruit Māori in to the health workforce
  6. International initiatives to increase the indigenous and minority health

Rauringa Raupa: Recruitment and Retention of Māori in the Health and Disability Workforce draws on Raranga Tupuake: The Māori Health Workforce Development Plan 2006. This research investigates goal one in Raranga Tupuake which is to increase Māori participation in the Health and Disability Workforce.

The aim of this research is to examine the barriers and influences which increase Māori participation in the health workforce and to examine the retention issues for the Māori health workforce.

The research incorporated both qualitative and quantitative components and used multi-methods that included a literature review, mapping statistics, key informant interviews, interviews with former Māori health professionals (ex-workforce), focus groups, and surveys of Māori tertiary health field students and the Māori health and disability workforce.
