Te Kahui Hauora Trust (Lakes)
The winner in the Whānau Ora Awards category Whānau Whaiti is Te Kahui Hauora Trust with their whānau ora model Hunga Manaaki. Theirs is an inspirational story starting back in 1994 when Lakeland Health contracted an iwi consultant to undertake a full cultural audit of the organisation. The key outcome of the audit was to establish a Māori health service within Lakeland Health to address a wide range of issues around service delivery to Māori. In 1996 Lakeland Health and Te Kahu Hauora Trust signed a contract for the provision of Hunga Manaaki services.
The story of development and implementation is huge, with extensive planning, monitoring, evaluation and consultation over the past decade to establish a culturally appropriate environment for Māori in hospital care. Hunga Manaaki is unique in that they are linked to iwi, which ensures accountability and successful working relationships with the DHB and its teams.
