Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga (Hawkes Bay)
The Whānau Whānui category winner is Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga with its innovation model Oranga Niho.
Oranga Niho provides appropriate, accessible and integrated oral health services to address disparities in oral health. It started in 2000 as a pilot programme with free dental treatment for tamariki and adolescents and emergency services for low income families. It grew from this original service description into a model delivered in line with the provider's practices and the kawa of Ngāti Kahunungu and today the service is a comprehensive and integrated dental treatment including health education and promotion for tamariki to kaumatua.
To the dentist they have added dental therapists, assistants and educators, Te Wana quality accreditation and community networking.
Their extraordinary success can be found in the 4 'A's – accessibility (mobile where required), acceptability (whānau friendly), appropriateness (whānau based) and affordability.
