Priorities for Māori and Pacific Health: Evidence from epidemiology

Date of publication: May 2001

This report presents the results of a study of the burden of disease experienced by Māori and Pacific peoples in New Zealand. It builds on the New Zealand Burden of Disease Study carried out by the Ministry of Health in 1999, and focuses on inequalities in the distribution of the disease and injury burden between major ethnic groups in New Zealand.

The study was carried out primarily to inform work undertaken by the Ministry of Health on inequalities in health, the Māori Health Strategy and the Pacific Health and Disability Action Plan. As with health policy in general, each of these major strategies requires prioritisation of health issues so that health gains can be maximised for the resources available.

This report presents an epidemiological approach to prioritising health issues among Maori and Pacific peoples, based on the burden of disease, its modifiability, and the contribution of specific causes of the burden to ethnic inequalities in health.
